Chang Kai Shek

Chang Kai Shek Memorial Hall was built in memory of the first President of the Republic of
China, designed by C.C Yang, the same architect for the Grand Hotel. The Memorial Hall is
painted white with a blue roof that represents the dominant colors in the ROC flag while the
emblem of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) beautifies the arched ceiling. The first work on
the memorial hall started in 1976, a year after the President passed away.

A bronze statue of Chiang faces west symbolically to the Presidential Office Building and
Mainland China while the hall’s front plaza has since become a major venue for democratic
gatherings.
